Shopify Upsell vs Cross-Sell: What's the Difference and When to Use Each
Upselling and cross-selling are two of the easiest ways to increase revenue from the shoppers you already have. They sound similar, but they work in different ways.
What is an upsell?
An upsell encourages a shopper to choose a better, bigger or more premium version of the product they are already looking at.
- A 500 ml bottle instead of 250 ml
- The pro version of a tool instead of the basic one
- A bundle of three instead of a single item
What is a cross-sell?
A cross-sell suggests a related product that goes well with what the shopper is buying.
- A phone case with a new phone
- Socks with a pair of shoes
- A cleaning kit with a coffee machine
When to use each
| Situation | Best choice |
|---|---|
| Shopper is comparing versions of one product | Upsell |
| Shopper has added an item to the cart | Cross-sell |
| You want to reach a free-shipping threshold | Cross-sell with a progress bar |
Tips that work
- Keep it relevant. Only suggest items that clearly help the customer.
- Watch the price. Add-ons that cost less than about a third of the main product usually convert best.
- Show it at the right time. Product pages suit upsells; the cart suits cross-sells.
- Test and measure. Track which offers actually add revenue and remove the ones that don’t.
The best offer feels like helpful advice, not a sales pitch.
Used together, upsells and cross-sells can noticeably lift your average order value without spending more on ads.
