How a Free-Shipping Progress Bar Increases Average Order Value
Shoppers love free shipping. A free-shipping progress bar turns that into a simple goal: “You’re ₹300 away from free shipping.”
Why it works
- Clear goal: people like finishing what they start.
- Instant feedback: the bar fills up as items are added.
- No discount needed: you reward a bigger cart instead of cutting prices.
Choosing your threshold
A good starting point is to set the free-shipping threshold 15–30% above your current average order value. Too low and you lose shipping margin; too high and shoppers give up.
Where to show it
- In the side cart (cart drawer), right after something is added
- On the full cart page
- Optionally as a slim banner at the top of the store
Pair it with product suggestions
When a shopper is close to the goal, show one or two low-priced items that would get them over the line. This turns the progress bar into an easy cross-sell.
Measure the impact
Compare average order value and conversion rate for a few weeks before and after launch. If conversion drops, lower the threshold slightly.
A progress bar is one of the quickest wins for any Shopify store: easy to set up and easy to understand.
